crème brûlée sugar cookies

I could not locate a (free) cooking torch, so on the suggestion of a friend I used my oven broiler. It worked pretty well, and certainly happened quickly. (If you try this recipe, keep an eye on the cookies, and try a few first to see how it goes.) I'm not sure if the caramelization would have been more even with a cooking torch...apparently the other option is to use a regular propane torch, but I couldn't imagine subjecting tiny innocent cookies to my torch wielding inexperience. This is a Fine Cooking recipe, reliable as usual.
